Shi'ite pilgrims pray at the Imam Abbas shrine in the holy city of Karbala.Iraqi authorities say that more than 2 million Shi’ite pilgrims descended on Iraq’s holy city of Karbala, with no major violence reported amid tight security.

Shi’ite Muslims from across Iraq, along with thousands of foreign pilgrims — most dressed in black — streamed into Karbala to mark Ashura, an emotive ritual in which the faithful beat their heads and chests and gash their heads with swords to mourn the slaying of Imam Hussein in Karbala in 680.

The event defines Shi’ism and its split from Sunni Islam.

The UN Security Council on Friday expressed its commitment to the new Iraqi government and improved relationships with bordering Kuwait, U.S. Ambassador Rosemary A. DiCarlo, whose country holds the Council’s rotating presidency this month, told reporters.

Research and Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, however, Abawi yesterday with the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States Amr Moussa, the arrangements for the upcoming Arab summit in Baghdad.

Abawi said after the meeting that a large delegation from the Arab League will visit Iraq soon to discuss the logistical arrangements for the summit, pointing out that the Iraqi security delegation visited the Arab League to discuss the security arrangements as well.

A member of the House of Representatives from the Kurdistan Alliance Mahmoud Othman said the coalition government with the formation of a political majority to avoid entering the country in crisis in the absence of Prime Minister-designate Nuri al-Maliki’s government during the constitutional period, which was left with only nine days, which means assigning of another candidate.

Baghdad (NINA) –A source from the Iraqiya Slate announced that “A meeting will be held on Thursday between the IS and the National Alliance to finalize the issues of the government formation.”

The source stated to the National Iraqi News Agency (NINA) “The meeting aims at set the final touches on the cabinet that will be headed by the candidate of the NC, Nouri al-Maliki.”

He said a press release issued by the Presidency of the Republic received (Agency Information / INA) that during the meeting to review the latest developments related to the formation of the government as scheduled, as was confirmed Talabani and Prime Minister the need for hard work and constructive cooperation and to provide facilities needed by the political blocs in order to complete the efforts to form a government, stressing the need to announce the formation of the new government during the constitutional period specified.

Highs: Despite seeing his coalition lose seats in Iraq’s March 7 parliamentary elections, Iraq’s incumbent Prime Minister looks poised to retain his mandate following an extraordinary political stalemate: for some eight months after the polls, disputes impeded the formation of a new government.

Maliki stayed in power and toughed out the deadlock and, following a deal some say was brokered more in Tehran’s corridors of power than Baghdad’s, was nominated on Nov. 11 once more to lead the government.

Called MP-based Iraqi unit Jumaili, on Friday, the political blocs to consensus on one opinion to rid Iraq of the issue of Kuwaiti reparations, stressing the need to exploit the Iraqi government achievement of the Security Council decision to lift most sanctions imposed on Iraq after its invasion of Kuwait through Iraq’s recovery economically and security, service.

The Jumaili in an interview for “Alsumaria News”, “The decision taken by the Security Council two days before the liberation of Iraq from all the debt that his trust of the year 1991 is a giant step calculated for the Iraqi government and the rest of the political blocs that fought for the withdrawal of Iraq from Chapter VII.”

Palm – to urge UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Thursday Iraq to translate the statements of good intentions towards the issues of missing Kuwaitis and nationals of third world countries and the return of property to the tangible results suggesting the formation of Iraq’s inter-ministerial committee to guide and coordinate efforts in the search for the missing Kuwaitis.

Ban said in a report to the Security Council, I call on Iraq to continue working with Kuwait in accordance with the spirit of trust and the process of building cooperation and the translation of statements of good intentions into concrete results to reach a clear progress and concrete stressing that he is in the interest of the Iraqi government establish a formal body as soon as possible to lead and coordinate efforts to clarify the fate of the Kuwaiti archives and other property, saying it is another practical step to demonstrate Iraq’s intention to build confidence with Kuwait.

BAGHDAD — The Iraqi Central Bank is planning to redenominate the national currency in an effort to ease transactions and allow people to carry less paper money, RFE/RL’s Radio Free Iraq (RFI) reports.

Mudhhir Muhammad Salih, a member of a Central Bank advisory panel, told RFI that a plan has been made to remove three zeros from the currency and phase out the current banknotes late this year.

Salih said by the end of 2010 the new banknotes will be fully introduced while the old banknotes will be gradually removed from circulation. He did not specify when the new notes would be issued.

Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, on Friday, that the agreement on the structure of the new government reached its final stages and will be announced in the coming days, noting that it would retain the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Alliance, as well as the Ministry of Oil, while likely to give the Ministry of Finance of the coalition in Iraq.

(Iba) .. Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari stressed that Kuwait is that they do not covet the wealth of the Iraqis.

Zebari said in an interview published by Al-Hayat newspaper on Friday, that the highest authorities of Kuwait assured the Iraqi authorities that they are not greedy in Iraqi funds, referring to deduct 5 per cent of Iraqi oil revenue to compensate Kuwait for the invasion twenty years ago under the regime of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

The NationalBAGHDAD // A political breakthrough this week has kept a fragile power-sharing deal alive, but major hurdles remain to Iraq forming a national unity government.

Rivals Nouri al Maliki, the Iraqi prime minister, and Ayad Allawi, his main challenger for the job of premier, held talks on Tuesday and, it seems, finally agreed that Mr Allawi would join an al Maliki-led administration.

The deal the two men struck in a 90-minute meeting confirms a similar arrangement previously outlined in November, which led to Mr al Maliki being nominated as prime minister after more than eight months of political deadlock, according to members of Mr Allawi’s Iraqiyya bloc.

Heavy security is being deployed in the Shia Muslim shrine city for Ashura, which marks the slaying of the revered Imam Hussein by the armies of the Sunni caliph Yazid in 680.

It has in previous years been a target for Sunni Arab extremists.

Congress ruled that the witness of the parliamentary session scheduled for Saturday to Prime Minister-designate Nuri al-Maliki and some of the names of his cabinet ministers of the new non-arrival of the political blocs to a final consensus.

A member of the center coalition Iraqi Muhammad Iqbal said to offer “Prime Minister-designate Nuri al-Maliki is part of his government during the Saturday session is unlikely,” noting that “the government will be as one basket containing all the ministries”.

ARBIL / Aswat al-Iraq: U.S. Vice President Joseph Biden discussed with President of Kurdistan region, Massoud Barzani, late Thursday the formation of the new Iraqi government, according to a statement from the White House.

“The two official discussed over the phone the latest developments in the formation of the new Iraqi government,” said the statement received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“Biden congratulated Barzani on the reelection as a head of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP),” it added.
