Ad MelkertErbil, May 14  – The Iraqi government has made important constitutional and institutional progress with the aid of the UN, thus turning a “new leaf”, said the representative of the UN’s secretary general in Iraq.

Speaking at a seminar on Iraq, Ed Melkert said that the Iraqi government has effectively laid the foundations of democracy and established its strategic and economic priorities.

Having cooperated “seriously” with the UN, Melkert said, The Iraqi government has focused on “the idea to develop the private sector, and this is good for the sustainability of the Iraqi economy.”

Whilst applauding Iraq’s efforts so far, the UN representative went on to say that there was still much work to be done.

“Iraq must improve its economy through paying attention to the agricultural, energy and scientific development sectors as well as the private sector,” he said.

Regarding the provision of public services and amenities to the Iraq people, a central gripe in the wave of public protests that swept through the Iraqi provinces in recent months, Melkert insisted that the current administration needed to take positive action.

“The Iraqi government must provide adequate housing for displaced families and provide employment opportunities and services,” he said.

To ensure Iraq’s future economic strength, Melkert said, further strategic steps must be taken.

“There is a need to legislate laws and act according to certain mechanisms to enable the government to enter the global economy and play an active role in international and local economic issues.”

Economists: Kuwait port will cut Umm Qasr traffic by 60%

Baghdad, May 14 (AKnews) – Iraq’s main port will lose 60 per cent of its business and major new port plans will be scuppered if Kuwait goes ahead with plans to develop a port just across its border with the country, economists have said.

The Kuwaitis laid the foundation stone to kick off the construction of Mubarak port, just over the border from the site of a new Iraqi port currently in construction, and close to Umm Qasr, Basra, Iraq’s only deep water port last Tuesday.

The move has flared historic tensions between the two states.

Report reveals the presence of about 60% of the meetings of the Iraqi parliament last month

Detection gathering of civil society organizations in Baghdad, Saturday, from 50 to 60% of the total number of deputies attending the meetings of the Council during the month of April last, pointing out that the Iraqi parliament held a first reading for the largest number of draft laws during the last month, according to a report of the pool.

The report stated that the Iraqi Council of Representatives held a first reading for 49 bill out of 63 projects guaranteed by the Council’s agenda during the month of April last, pointing out that the Iraqi parliament approved the 5 draft laws of the total bills to held the first reading during the month past which is equivalent to 14% of the total bills before it which are directly linked to people’s daily life.

MP of Alwasat Alliance Khalid Alalwani announced on Saturday that parliament will hold next week an emergency session for the purpose of voting on the nominees of security ministries .

Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Al Maliki has called to give a larger role to Iraqi clerics in managing the country’s affairs.

Iraqi clerics are responsible for building up the community and the State not the ministries, directorates and institutions, a source told Alsumaria.

Al Maliki however criticized religious institutions for being influenced by parties involved in corruption.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Al Maliki complained of media’s corrupt role calling on religious institutions to raise religious awareness through the media in a call that is regarded to be as the most radical stand taken by Al Maliki.

May 12 was the last day of trading for Mosul Bank (BMFI) ahead of its proposed merger with Union Bank (BUOI). The stock closed up 7% bringing its year-to-date gain to 29%. BUOI ended the day unchanged and is up only 12% year-to-date.

While the deal is being described as a merger, it would in fact amount to a take-over of BUOI by BMFI. (Either way, it’s a first for the Iraq Stock Exchange.) Both have the same share capital but BMFI is much larger in terms of number of branches, depost base, and the size of its loan book. (There’s more on the two banks here.)

Kurdistan Alliance senior official Mahmoud Othman told Alsumarianews that Kurdistan leader Massoud Barazani does not plan to take a new initiative regarding the present political situation in Iraq.

Othman revealed that there are US pressures in this regard and called to bring to public Arbil’s agreement so that all Iraqis can define the parties that did not commit to the agreement, a source told Alsumaria.

Barazani affirms that it is a sole agreement signed by heads of political parties.
