Fox News: Biden to talk economy, currency during visit to China

WASHINGTON — Vice President Joe Biden is expected to emphasize China’s unwillingness to allow its currency to rise in value against the dollar, aides said ahead of Biden’s trip to China, Japan and Mongolia, beginning Tuesday.

U.S. officials said in a conference call ahead of the trip that the U.S. has seen some appreciation in the exchange rate with China but they are not satisfied with where it stands. They said Biden wants to emphasize the rate because it’s important not only for China but for emerging markets and U.S. exports. Biden will also discuss the currencies of its other major trading partners.

LA Times: Largest foreign currency broker hit with largest ever fine

The nation’s largest foreign currency broker was hit with a $2-million fine and accused by regulators of profiting at the expense of its customers.

The fine levied against the broker, FXCM Inc., comes as foreign currency trading is growing in popularity among home investors but also coming under greater scrutiny for the large losses suffered by investors.

The $2-million sanction from the National Futures Assn. is the largest single fine ever imposed against a currency broker in the U.S., according to the NFA. The complaint filed by NFA said the agency’s investigation “revealed a number of deficiencies,” including practices that were “unequal,” “inequitable” and “arbitrary.”

Kuwait, Iraq hold talks over controversial port

An Iraqi technical delegation has held talks in Kuwait over a seaport Baghdad claims would strangle its narrow shipping lanes in the Gulf

The Kuwaiti side presented illustrations and studies on Mubarak Al-Kabir port and its impact on shipping in Khour Abdullah waterway, said an official quoted by the KUNA news agency.

Khour Abdullah is a narrow waterway that separates Iraqi and Kuwaiti shores off Bubiyan Island where the megaport is being built, and leads to Iraq’s Umm Qasr port and other smaller ports.

On Monday, the Iraqi delegation visited the site of the port, some 120 km (75 miles) north of Kuwait City and is due to hold more meetings with a regional environment organisation and other technical bodies, the ministry said.

Baghdad (news) .. A source at the presidency, said that President Jalal Talabani received a list of candidates of the Iraqi of the Ministry of Defence this morning.

The leaders of political blocs have agreed at a meeting held at the home of President Jalal Talabani, to form a ministerial committee to implement all the terms of the Irbil, including the security ministries to resolve its decision within two weeks.

The source said in a statement (of the Agency news) on Tuesday: “President Talabani received a list of candidates and the Ministry of Defense by Iraq, on Tuesday morning,” adding that it hoped to send a list to Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, during (48) hours.

In the former, Spokeswoman for the Iraqi List, Maysoon al that will hand over its list of candidates and the Ministry of Defence before the end of the period set by the leaders of political blocs.

Iraq May Refer Kuwait’s New Port to UN

Al-Iraqiya television has reported that Iraq is threatening to take the case of Kuwait’s Mubarak al-Kabir Port to the United Nations if the harbour violates its maritime rights.

An Iraqi Technical Delegation, led by the government’s Advisor, Thamer al-Ghadban, reportedly arrived in Kuwait on Sunday for a 2-day official visit.

Bloomberg reports that Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, in an interview with Al Sumeria television, has officially requested that its neighbour halts construction until the end of Iraq’s investigation.

BAGHDAD (Iba) … Confirmed the official spokesman of the Iraqi bloc said Maysoon al-Iraqi hand over the names of candidates for the position of the Ministry of Defense to the President before the end of the period agreed between the leaders of political blocs in their last meeting.

According to Said the Messenger of Khorshnaw of Kurdistan News Agency (Rn), that “the House of Representatives approved at its 23-day a bill reducing the salaries of the presidencies of Iraq’s three (the Republic and the Council of Ministers and the House of Representatives),” noting that “the House of Representatives kept the allocation risk for the three presidencies.”

Iraqi Minister ‘Reiterates’ Calls To Suspend Kuwait Port Project

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 15: Iraqi Transpor-tation Minister Hadi Al-Amiri has reiterated calls for the suspension of the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port project and stressed the need to convince Kuwait to engage in objective dialogue to address the issue within the framework of good neighborhood, reports Alam Alyawm daily.

Al-Amiri pointed out all the specialized international companies have reached an agreement that the project will have a negative impact on the navigation activities at the Iraqi ports in Zubair and Umm Qasr. He argued Kuwait can relocate the project since it has more than 500 kilometers navigation areas, instead of the site near the Iraqi border.

In another development, Iraqi lawmaker Susan Al-Saad asserted no public Iraqi official, regardless of his position, should be allowed to negotiate with Kuwait on relinquishing 400 meters of Iraqi land in exchange for the reconstruction of the Safwan exit border. She considers this another transgression on the part of Kuwait and Iraq must take a firm stand against such acts.

Chinese currency increasingly becoming preferred legal tender

The not-so-overt appreciation in the renminbi — or yuan, as the Chinese currency is more popularly known — is making it an increasingly preferred legal tender in the emerging markets.

On Monday, the People’s Bank of China pegged it 0.03% higher — the fourth consecutive day it has done so — to a record 6.3950 per dollar.

That’s the highest level since 2007, and comes after China reported a mind-boggling trade surplus of $31.5 billion in July, the biggest since January 2009, last week.
