NEW YORK, Sep 01, 2011 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) — According to a recent assessment by Travelex, the U.S. dollar has strengthened against the currencies of Turkey, Vietnam, Egypt and Argentina, among other top destinations for U.S. travelers. As the world’s largest non-bank foreign currency provider, Travelex constantly monitors exchange rates and is therefore able to determine which overseas destinations are offering the greatest value at any given time.

The Turkish Lira, for example, experienced a year-over-year change of almost 14 percent, which means a visitor to the Eurasian country would receive 14 percent more for his or her currency this year compared to last year. The Vietnamese Dong, Egyptian Pound and Argentinian Peso are also offering a better bargain for U.S. travelers in 2011, with year-over-year percent changes ranging from approximately five to seven percent.

As the Arab Spring drives change across our region, bringing the hope of democracy and reform to millions of Arabs, less attention is being paid to the plight of Iraq and its people. We were the first to transition from dictatorship to democracy, but the outcome in Iraq remains uncertain. Our transition could be a positive agent for progress, and against the forces of extremism, or a dangerous precedent that bodes ill for the region and the international community.Debate rages in Baghdad and Washington around conditions for a U.S. troop extension beyond the end of this year.

BAGHDAD – Under increased US pressure, an Iraqi crackdown on Iranian-backed Shi’ite militias has helped produce a previously elusive goal: For the first time since the US invasion of Iraq, an entire month has passed without a single US service member dying.

The milestone is particularly remarkable because it comes after 14 troops were killed in July, making it the most deadly month for the Americans in three years; and it has occurred amid a frightening campaign of suicide bombings and assassinations from Sunni insurgents that killed hundreds of Iraqis, resurrecting the specter of the worst days of sectarian fighting.

Hans-Olaf Henkel’s piece in yesterday’s Financial Times is making waves. Okay, Henkel is an odious man, but my view, which was once considered borderline crazy, is now getting more serious consideration.

The Germans were willing to go into a currency union because by construction that agreement removed the weapon exchange rate depreciation from its competitors. German real wage discipline, labor productivity gains, and engineering innovation could not be undercut at the stroke of a pen. Recall that there are basically 3 Germanys:

Germany #1 being the Bundesbank and “finanzkapital”, which retains huge phobias about the recurrence of Weimar-style hyperinflation, and retains an almost theological belief in “sound money”.
