BAGHDAD — Iraq has recovered $216 million in the past month from bank accounts overseas belonging to two Saddam-era officials, the country’s anti-graft watchdog said in a statement seen on Saturday.

The Commission on Integrity reclaimed $116 million from accounts in France, it said in a statement issued Thursday, in addition to $100 million retained from Kuwait in August.

Central bank intervention in currency markets has picked up considerable pace in the last one month.

The Swiss National Bank (SNB) started the process by selling euros at 1.20 franc levels after its currency had appreciated by over 15% against the common unit in June-August.

But the markets continued to take the currency up, forcing the SNB to start intervening aggressively.

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Iraqi Foreign Ministry’s Undersecretary, Lubeid Abbawi, has said on Saturday that his government’s delegation scheduled to attend the United Nation’s meetings in New York would call on the International Organization to “respect its sovereignty and support its exclusion from Charter 7.”

“Iraq shall attend the UN General Assembly’s meetings in its 66th session in New York, in a delegation to be led by President Jalal Talabani, to be accompanied by Foreign Minister Hoshiar Zibary,” Abbawi told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

VietFinanceNews.com – Vietnam will experience an economic growth rate of 5.9 percent in 2012, according to a recent report by Switzerland’s Credit Suisse Bank.

The figure is higher than that of 2011 (5.8 percent) but lower than the bank’s previous prediction of 6.2 percent, according to Santitarn Sathirathai, a Credit Suisse economist.

He noted that the global economic downturn in conjunction with the Vietnamese Government’s tightening policies – especially the State Bank of Vietnam’s decision to perform tight controls to maintain a credit growth limit in the next five years – will have a significant impact on the country’s economy in 2012.

The report also attributed the highest rate of inflation recorded in August to tight monetary and credit policies.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner said China needs to let the yuan gain against currencies other than the dollar.
