Iraq: Bush Hails New Currency Ahead Of Launch

Prague, 13 October 2003 (RFE/RL) — U.S. President George W. Bush has hailed the launch of Iraq’s new currency as an important milestone for the Iraqi economy.

In his weekly radio address on 11 October, Bush said the new currency will help unify Iraq, which had previously used two different versions of the dinar in different areas.

“For more than a decade, different areas of Iraq have used two different versions of the dinar, and many of those notes were counterfeit, diminishing the value of those that were genuine. The new dinar will be used throughout Iraq, thereby unifying the economy and the country. The new currency will have special features that will make it difficult to counterfeit,” Bush said.

A source close to President Jalal Talabani said the overlapping jurisdictions of the parties to make the executive branch of the relationship between the President and the Prime Minister closer to the anomaly of a normal relationship.

The source, who preferred not to be named, said the Taliban intend to in the next few days to address the al-Maliki about the need to respect the constitutional rights of the President and stop playing the dominant role of the dictator on all aspects of the state as the state suffers mainly from the paralysis of the year.

The chief executive of the Iraqi Stock Exchange, Taha Ahmed Abdul Salam to double the market value of the Stock Exchange from four billion to eight billion dollars as soon as the shares of the three mobile phone companies operating in the country in the Iraqi stock market.

It is noteworthy that any company of the three companies had not yet become a joint stock company, a key requirement and a first step towards a public offering in the Iraqi Stock Exchange, but regulators granted the three companies more time to complete the process which was supposed at the outset to be by August 31

Ministry of Transport confirmed that the presence of the Kuwaiti port of Mubarak would negatively affect the water and Iraqi ports.

The media adviser in the Ministry of Transport Karim Nouri said in a statement singled out by the agency and all of Iraq [where] on Friday that “the concerned authorities and the technical committees in the Ministry of Transport has repeatedly stressed that the port of Kuwait’s Mubarak will be a major threat to Iraqi ports.”
