Iraq may soon see its first circulating coinage since 2004, but it might be quite different from what was used in the past.

Alsumaria Iraqi satellite television reported on Sept. 3 that, “The denomination of the Iraqi currency reached its final stages as the study and draft resolution reached the Cabinet after being sent by [the] Iraq Central Bank. Iraq Central Bank said that it won’t only delete the zeros, but it will also change Iraq monetary structure in order to provide bigger currencies. According to this project, coins will appear again in the Iraqi currency. As for the bank notes, the Central Bank will recourse to international institutions to print them.”

With short quays and limited handling equipment, Umm Qasr’s state-owned berths are in desperate need of modernisation

Ever since US-led forces toppled president Saddam Hussein in April 2003, shipping lines have expected Iraq to generate significant volume. Iraq’s infrastructure and buildings are ageing and were badly damaged during the upheaval that followed western intervention. But while port development is considered crucial to Iraqi reconstruction, progress has been halting.

In 2008, the Ministry of Transport halted plans to privatise Umm Qasr, Iraq’s only commercial deepwater port. However, in the last two years, it has invited three overseas port operators to upgrade and manage berths at the port that serves the southern city of Basra.

Baghdad, October 19 / October (Rn) – The Ministry of Planning and Development Cooperation of Iraq on Wednesday, that the number of investment projects carried out in 2011 reached 144 projects on the housing sector accounted for the largest proportion of them.

He said the ministry spokesman Abdul Zahra al-Hindawi told the Kurdish news agency (Rn) that “the number of investment projects implemented in 2011 amounted to 144 projects, most projects that serve the infrastructure of buildings, schools and essential services.”

Basra, October 19 / October (Rn) – The director general of Iraqi ports on Wednesday near the end of the Turkish company from the basic designs of the draft port of Faw in Basra province and handed over the end of this month to begin work to implement it.

Under pressure from a great demand for USD, foreign exchange rates are now heading upwards after a few months of relative stability. Apart from the trade deficit and balance of payment issues, the substantial difference between the domestic gold price and the global gold price is another factor contributing to changes in foreign exchange rates.

At one time the difference was as much as VND4 million per tael, which drove speculators to purchase USD for illicit gold imports. A number of enterprises have also started to buy USD out of concern that the exchange rate will fluctuate at the end of the year, when demand for greenbacks throughout the economy generally increases as payments on USD loans become due.

VietFinanceNews.com – Experts all believe that the decision by the State Bank of Vietnam to adjust the interbank exchange rate by another 10 dong per dollar to 20,678 dong per dollar is a “reasonable, flexible and timely” move. The devaluation has been made after the State Bank announced that the exchange rate adjustment, if it is made, will not be higher than one percent by the end of 2011.

After keeping the dong/dollar exchange rate stable for more than one month, the State Bank of Vietnam has been adjusting the exchange rate continuously since the beginning of October. To date, the dollar price has appreciated by 50 dong per dollar in comparison with September, or 0.24 percent.

Iraq Decides to review the budget of 2012 at the light of the observations of the International Monetary Fund

Baghdad, October 19 / October (Rn) – The economic adviser in the Iraqi government federal, Wednesday, the cabinet decided to review the draft budget in 2012 of the comments of the International Monetary Fund.
