Just hours away many of you will gather with friends and family or maybe just sit quietly as the New Year draws near. If among friends or in solitude “Auld Lang Syne” will cross your mind as the clock strikes midnight.
It’s a song that is sung every New Years Eve as we say good bye to the old and we welcome in the new but what does this song really mean?
The song was written by poet Robert Burns in Scotland around the late 1700’s. Many say the words are from an even earlier Scottish folk song sung at New Years speaking of friendship. The song soon became tradition in Scotland and as Scots immigrated to the United States this tradition continued.
