Zebari is moving to the permanent members to ensure support for Baghdad

Discusses the UN Security Council this month, three reports on ways to ensure to remove Iraq from Chapter VII.

UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) — Hamid Al-Bayati, permanent representative of Iraq to the UN said here Tuesday that his country has seen some important improvements of late, but will still face challenges ahead.

His statements came as he addressed the UN Security Council during a meeting on the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

“The political and security situations in Iraq witnessed tremendous and notable improvement in the past few months, and the next year will bring great challenges and responsibilities for the Iraqi government after the U.S. forces’ withdrawal by the end of this year,” said Al-Bayati.

U.S. troops, which have been in Iraq since 2003, are due to vacate the Middle Eastern country by the end of the year. (more…)

KUWAIT: The region will face tough economic challenges in the wake of continuing political turmoil, remarked an economist. Speaking at the ‘Economist Road show’ held yesterday at the Salwa Sabah Hall in Salmiya, Simon Williams Chief Economist, HSBC Middle East, forecasted that continuing political transition in the Arab world, (even without being affected by the current global slowdown), would pose a threat to regional growth and stability.

He suggested that West-led economic downturn is unlikely to trigger a repeat of 2008 slump in the Middle East and North Africa. “Exactly one year ago, during the same road show, [which HSBC organizes annually], we never knew that unprecedented political shift could happen in the Arab world,” he told an audience comprising mostly bankers, economists and businessmen. Baghdad, December 7 (Rn) – The parliamentary Finance Committee, Wednesday, about the agreement between the

House and the World Bank and the government budget in 2012 before final approval by the first day yesterday, is expected to vote on the budget without hindrance.

The Iraqi government approved the fifth of this month in its emergency budget in 2012 by $ 100 billion (about 117 trillion Iraqi dinars) and a deficit of up to $ 13.5 billion (about 17 trillion dinars).

The government has allocated in the budget and the bulk of 80 billion dinars, dollars as operational budget, has allocated 37 billion dinars as investment budget.

Iraq wants to make a deal with the United States for another 18 F-16 multi-role fighters to expand its fledgling air force, according to reports from UPI and Aviation Week.

Lockheed Martin won the deal to provide 12 F-16C and six F-16D Block 52 aircraft, plus spares and support. The contract runs through May 2018.

UPI values the contract at around $4.5 billion, while Aviation Week has a figure of $835 million.
The jets will have advanced electronic systems, including the APG-68v9 radars, the most modern available to Block 50 aircraft, and countermeasures systems. They will be armed with Raytheon’s AIM-120 advanced medium-range air-to-air missiles, which can be fired beyond visual range. (more…)
