Ban recommends extension of mission on Kuwaiti POW”s

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon UNITED NATIONS, Dec 10 (KUNA) — Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon recommended to the Security Council to extend financing of the UN high-level Coordinator Gennady Tarasov’s mandate on the issue of Kuwaiti prisoners for the next six months.

“In view of the potential for progress that lies ahead, I recommend that the Security Council extend the financing of the Coordinator’s mandate until 30 June 2012 in order to continue to build upon the existing momentum towards the implementation” of the relevant Council resolution, Ban said in a report to the Council, addressed late on Friday. Baghdad: Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region must decide whether it wishes to remain part of the country or form its own independent state, Baghdad’s oil minister said in an interview published Friday.

Abdelkarim al-Luaybi’s strong comments come as Iraq aims to ramp up oil production despite not having passed a hydrocarbons law to regulate the distribution of lucrative revenues from crude sales.

“It’s up to the Kurdistan region to decide whether it has made a strategic decision to stay part of Iraq or it has made up its mind to establish its independent state,” Luaybi told the iraqoilforum.com website run by energy analyst Ruba Husari. (more…)

The Central Bank of Iraq is still lagging behind in its financial management despite the passage of eight years of political transition in the country.

BAGHDAD, Dec. 10 (AKnews) – Iraqi Planning Ministry has officially asked for the United Nations Economic Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) to send international experts to aid the Ministry.

Speaking to AKnews Ali Shukri, the Minister, said: “Iraq does not need funds but help with planning the services and developmental projects.”

Proposed Iraqi budget for 2012 has reached $100 billion USD (116,500 billion IQD), with a deficit of $13.5 billion USD (15,500 billion IQD). The budget is based on a set price of a barrel of oil, $85 USD (99,000 IQD).

BAGHDAD, Nov. 10 (AKnews) – Representative Mohsen Sadun of the Kurdish Blocs Coalition in the House of Representative said that Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is eligible for a third term in office.
