WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)–Iraq’s proposed budget will allow the war-torn country to have continuing access to an International Monetary Fund credit line, IMF chief Christine Lagarde said Tuesday after a meeting with Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki.

“I am very encouraged by the government’s new budget proposal for 2012 that was recently submitted to the Iraqi Council of Representatives,” Lagarde said in a statement after the meeting. “The proposal aims to restrain the growth of current spending, thus freeing up resources for infrastructure investment and social support, while limiting the size of the budget deficit,” she said.

Al-Maliki says Iraq is open for US business investment

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki welcomed all US corporations to invest in Iraq as US troops are leaving the country before the end of the year.

“We are at the threshold of a new phase in the relationship in between the new companies, based on mutual interests and mutual desire”, said al-Maliki in remarks before business leaders at the US Chamber of Commerce. “It is now not the generals, but it is the corporations and businessmen who will be in the front of this stage”, he added. The government has transferred $427million to Iraqi Kurds as part of an agreement to settle differences over the development of oil fields, said Finance Minister Rafie al-Essawi.

The sum will be used to cover expenses foreign companies have incurred in the development and production of oil in the Kurdish regime, the minister said.

The Kurds had struck several deals with foreign firms to develop oil fields in within their autonomous region comprising the three provinces of Arbil, Dahouk and Sulaimaniya. (more…)

BAGHDAD, Dec. 13 (AKnews) – Iraq will host 20 internationals exhibtions and trade fairs in 2012.

It remained unclear if the decision of the Iraqi Trade Ministry was based on a demand of foreign companies to attend these conference.

Sadiq Sultan, general manager of the Exhibtions Comany in the Ministry, said, “The exhibitions attract international companies to enter the Iraqi market, especially in the fields of construction, agriculture, industry and investment.” (more…)

BAGHDAD, Dec. 13 (AKnews) – The United States allegedly promised to send 22 American companies for business to Iraq.

Salam al-Qureshi, economic adviser in the Iraqi government, claimed that the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad had made that promise.

According to Qureshi, four of them are pharmaceutical companies, three of them are working in the field of education. The others are constructions and industrial companies.

AKnews contacted the U.S. Embassy for a comment but has not received an answer so far.

Nujaifi blamed political disputes for why the oil and gas law has not been discussed and passed in the Council yet.

Washington: As Iraq moves forward on the path of reconstruction and economic revival with the end of war and withdrawal of American forces from the country, it is expected to grow much faster than the two Asian giants, India and China, US President Barack Obama said on Monday.

“In the coming years, it’s estimated that Iraq’s economy will grow even faster than China’s or India’s. With oil production rising, Iraq is on track to once again be one of the region’s leading oil producers,” Obama said at a joint news conference with visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
