Bloomberg: Iraq Deplores ‘Currency Attack’ as Dollars Flow to Syria, Iran

Iraq’s central bank said it’s under a “currency attack” as traders buy U.S. dollars in daily auctions and resell them on the black market inSyria and Iran, which face hard currency shortages due to sanctions.
Demand for the greenback at the central bank auctions has risen since November to about $200 million to $300 million a day, compared with about $160 million in the prior 12 months, the deputy central bank governor, Mudher Salih, said in an interview in Baghdad Jan. 10.

BAGHDAD, Aswat al-Iraq: Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister, Saleh al-Mutlaq,has conferred in Baghdad on Thursday with the UN Sec-General’s Representative in Iraq,Martin Cobler, on the current developments on the Iraqi political arena and to bring viewpoints closer among political blocs to overcome the current crisis.
“Mutlaq has called during the meeting on the United Nations to shoulder its responsibility,highly assessing Cobler’s role to settle the problems and find understandings to strengthen democracy in Iraq,” according to a statement by Saleh’s office received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency. (more…)

The Central Bank attributed the reduced budget for fiscal year 2012 to the violation of Iraq of the terms of borrowing from the IMF.

Baghdad, January 12 (Rn) – The Kurdistan Alliance, Thursday, for holding an expanded meeting next Sunday in the presence of the three presidencies and representatives of the main blocs in preparation for the National Conference to be held later this month to resolve the current political crisis in the country.
The three presidencies were held last Tuesday after the arrival of Talabani’s Baghdad meeting to discuss the preparations necessary to hold a national conference of political forces.

Gulf Arab princes meet to discuss holding a summit in Iraq

Baghdad, January 12 (Rn) – A source in the Iraqi Council of Ministers announced the appointment of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, his son, the director of his private office, indicating that the son of al-Maliki is working to make changes to the administrative staff of the Council of Ministers.
The source, who preferred anonymity, told the Kurdish news agency (Rn) that “Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki appointed his son Ahmed as director of his own office shared with Riad al-Moussawi.” (more…)
