Babinaoz (Reuters) – Informed sources said that the UN Security Council will be held on 25 July the current meeting to renew the mandate of the UN mission to help in Iraq (UNAMI) for a full year at the request made by the Iraqi government.
The Cabinet had decided during its meeting Tuesday 26 June to inform the Secretariat of the United Nations through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to extend the mandate of the United Nations to help in Iraq a full year and the sources pointed out that the Iraqi Foreign Minister sent a letter to the Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon said where the «events and developments in Arab spring confirmed the credibility of the approach of Iraq in building a democratic state and the protection of human rights, population, and we are making progress in the consolidation of this approach, which will serve our people and in the light of this, Iraq needs the support of the United Nations Mission» citing the desire of the Iraqi government in extend the work of the United Nations Mission for 12 months.
The mission of the United Nations to help Iraq (UNAMI) is the entity has been established on the basis of UN Security Council resolution No. 1500 in August 14, 2003, and has a mission official mandate for its work through the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq and the first special representative appointed in Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello who was killed in the bombing of the Canal Hotel in Baghdad on August 19/2003 and then appointed Ashraf Qazi, the representative of the Secretary-General on July 14, 2004 and ended its mission on September 18, 2007 and was appointed Staffan de Mistura, Special Representative again in Iraq until June 2009 before appointed for Representative The current Special Martin Kobler.
