KUWAIT, Sept 6 (KUNA) — The Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry has initiated an immediate meeting with the Iraqi Ambassador to Kuwait Mohammad Bahar Al-Oloum asking him to check with the Iraqi authorities on the accuracy of recent circulating reports on the potential existence of Kuwaiti POWs alive in Iraq who may have been transported at some time to Iran, an official source at the ministry affirmed on Thursday.
The ministry’s motive comes as a response to what was published by a Kuwaiti newspaper earlier on Thursday quoting Iraq’s National Security Advisor Muwafaq Al-Rubaie as saying that some Kuwaiti POWs were alive and had been transported to Iran from Iraq.
In a statement, the source said that the ministry has also asked the Kuwaiti Ambassador to Iraq Ali Al-Moumen to closely follow the subject with Iraqi authorities.
In the same context, the ministry contacted the regional mission of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), as chairman of the Technical Committee of the Tripartite Commission on Kuwait’s POWS in Iraq, to follow the subject, said the source. (end) om.ma KUNA 061753 Sep 12NNNN
