BAGHDAD, March 7 (Reuters) – An Iraqi businessman, trying to cash in on the billions of dollars pouring into the country from lucrative oil contracts, complains that his biggest headache is not bomb attacks or sectarian politics but primitive banks.
“Where are the credit cards?” said the businessman, who represents a foreign automobile company in Iraq and declined to be identified because of his dealings with the government. Elsewhere in the Gulf, he noted, credit cards are widely used. “How far away are we from this development?” (more…)

Trade Bank of Iraq announced that a high-quality credit card will be issued for the first time in Iraq and in cooperation with international banks and companies sober, in a move to increase the volume of credit card transactions in Iraq.

Last month the Central Bank of Iraq co-hosted a conference with USAID’s Iraq Financial Development Project on “Integrating the Banking and Financial Services Sector in Iraq.” This event, which was held in Istanbul from November 18-19 covered two upcoming changes to the payments system that have the potential to revolutionize Iraq’s banking sector.
The first is the introduction of a “national switch” for processing credit card and ATM transactions. The switch—essentially a router and some specialized software—will connect all of Iraq’s ATM machines and credit card point-of-sale scanners to a common platform. At present, each card-issuing bank operates its own system. Because not every point of sale is connected to every system, no one card will work everywhere. Banks promote use of international payment cards

According to Document 2033/NHNN-QLNH dated March 12, 2011, the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) has requested credit institutions to enhance the opening of international payment cards to facilitate individuals to use international payment cards while making payment abroad.
