Two-thirds of Egyptians see the economy as the country’s primary challenge, and since the West’s promised aid has not yet materialized, saving in foreign currencies has increased and government borrowing costs have skyrocketed. Middle Eastern countries without significant oil resources face a sharp slowdown in economic growth as the effects of the Arab Spring reverberate across the region, the International Monetary Fund said Wednesday.

In a twice-yearly report, the IMF cut its economic growth forecast for the Mideast’s oil importing countries – including Egypt and Tunisia – to just 1.9 percent this year. That is down from an earlier IMF forecast of 2.3 percent and well below the more than 4 percent growth in 2010.

The report confirmed the Arab Association for Investment and Export Credit, based in Kuwait that foreign direct investment in 21 Arab countries will fall to 55.1 billion dollars in 2011 from 66.2 billion dollars in 2010.

Egypt is being considered for incorporation into the Gulf Corporation Council (GCC).

Discussions are under way about making Egypt a GCC member, the Kuwaiti al-Watan newspaper reported Gulf sources as saying.

The sources also said that the GCC states are enthusiastic about Egypt joining, as the country has the capabilities and shares mutual strategic interests with the Gulf states. Egypt’s security historically has also been linked to the security of the Gulf, they added.
