Iraq ‘ready to explode’ unless leaders take action to stem violence, warns UN envoy

30 May 2013 – The intensifying violence in Iraq is “ready to explode” and may re-ignite widespread sectarian strife unless the country’s leaders take immediate action, the top United Nations envoy there warned today amid the latest wave of deadly attacks.

A wave of deadly bombings struck the capital, Baghdad, today, while the governor of Anbar province reportedly escaped an assassination attempt when bombs exploded near his convoy, injuring four of his bodyguards. This follows a number of bombings in Baghdad on Monday that killed more than 50 people. (more…)

Baghdad (AIN) -German called the Iraqi government to explain the political situation in Iraq before discussing the mutual cooperation agreement between Iraq and the European Union in the next EU meeting.

Diplomatic source told All Iraq News Agency “The German Foreign Ministry called the Iraqi Ambassador to German to convey to the Iraqi officials, German’s concerns over three points which affected the discussions conducted in the recent EU meeting about activating the mutual cooperation agreement between Iraq and the EU, calling Iraq to resolve these points before the next meeting of the EU.” (more…)

Baghdad (AIN) –The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the European Union are going to consider the situation in Iraq during their next meeting that will be held on next Monday.

An EU official stated in a press release on Saturday “The EU received a call from Iraq to participate in reducing the tensions witnessed in the country,” noting that “The EU hopes to play a role that helps in sustaining stability in Iraq and the Ministers will exchange the views but will not issue any specific recommendations at this stage.” (more…)

This will permit the transfer of frozen funds to the successor arrangements to the Development Fund for Iraq put in place by the GOI under the conditions set out in UNSC resolutions 1483 (2003) and 1956 (2010),” said the short statement without giving any details.

Baghdad/ NINA /–The European Parliament ratified in its plenary meeting which held in Strasbourg on the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement between the Government of Iraq and the European Union.

A statement by the Foreign Ministry said : ” Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari had signed in Brussels with High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union Catherine Ashton on the agreement in the eleventh of last May.”

Baghdad, February 4 (Rn) – The Central Bank of Iraq, Saturday, that Iraq can not join the international community in implementing the terms of international economic sanctions imposed on Iran because it will have a negative impact on the Iraqi economy, which remains under Chapter VII.

And signed the U.S. government in December last December a law imposing sanctions on financial institutions that deal with the Central Bank of Iran’s main conduit for Iran’s oil revenues, while also the European Union announced a ban on shipments of Iranian oil to be implemented starting from July next.
