BAGHDAD — Less than two months after American troops left, the State Department is preparing to slash by as much as half the enormous diplomatic presence it had planned for Iraq, a sharp sign of declining American influence in the country.

Baghdad (NINA) – US ambassador to Iraq, James Jeffrey, announced the US specialized companies’ willingness to build power stations in Iraq and equip them on the installment payment system if guarantees from the Iraqi government were available.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Electricity quoted Jeffrey as saying, during a meeting with Minister of Electricity Karim Aftan “the U.S. companies are willing to work on projects of the Ministry of Electricity under all forms of cooperation, whether direct payment or in installment,” noting that the issue of payment in installment needs to be supported by the Iraqi government, to provide adequate guarantees to assure the companies on their dues in Iraq.

President Jalal Talabani called for enhancing economic relations and encouraging U.S. companies to work in Iraq, according to a presidential statement.

Erbil, Sep. 20 (AKnews) – Iraqi President Jalal Talabani wants the United States to urge American companies to invest in Iraq.

In a meeting with U.S. Ambassador James Jeffrey and the Commanding General of the U.S. Forces, Lloyd Austin, yesterday, President Talabani stressed the bilateral economic relations to serve the common interests of the people of Iraq and the United States.

The US ambassador in Baghdad said on Saturday that the State Department has asked for a $6.2 billion budget for Iraq in 2012, underscoring that its oil and gas reserves were critical for the world’s future energy needs.

“This country is on a glide path to increase its oil exports,” Ambassador James Jeffrey told reporters at the sprawling US embassy in Baghdad, the world’s largest.

The embassy plans to double in size next year to 16,000 personnel, when it takes over many military tasks after US troops pull out of Iraq at the end of this year, including military sales and training of Iraqi security forces.
