Iraq signed six agreements of cooperation with Kuwait on Wednesday and hoped that the United Nations would lift sanctions imposed on Iraq after its invasion of Kuwait in 1990.

The latest sign of improvement of ties between the two countries came during the visit of Kuwaiti Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah on Wednesday who met with Iraqi leaders, including Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki. (more…)

BAGHDAD: Kuwait’s Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Mubarak al-Sabah landed in Iraq on Wednesday for a surprise one-day visit as the two countries look to cement improving ties and resolve a swathe of long-running disputes.

Sabah was met at Baghdad airport by his Iraqi counterpart Nuri al-Maliki.

Along with signing bilateral agreements on the economy, education, culture and the environment, Kuwait and Iraq will also focus on unresolved disagreements stemming from Saddam Hussein’s 1990 invasion of the Gulf emirate.

Iraq has signed the United Nations today a memorandum of understanding to support Iraq’s efforts in the fight against corruption.

The memorandum was signed by Iraq Alaa judge Jawad Hamid Chairman of the Integrity Commission and the International Organization Mr. Live Veladson the deputy representative of the regional office of the United Nations to combat crime in the region of the Middle East and North Africa. (more…)

Baghdad (newsletter). Iraq’s Ambassador in Kuwait has reviewed Mohammed Bahr Al-Ulum with French Ambassador in Kuwait Nada yafi efforts Iraq out of Chapter VII.

His statement received (News Agency) a copy of: the two sides discussed efforts Iraq out of Chapter VII through the implementation of international commitments including the file of prisoners and missing persons and Kuwaiti property and maintenance of border pillars.

He was also examining tracks and the positive developments in the relationship between the two countries after the settlement of the Iraqi Airways and file Convention of maritime navigation in the Khawr Abd Allah.

Reviewed Iraq’s ambassador to Kuwait Mohammed Hussein Bahr al-Ulum with the Ambassador of France in Kuwait Nada Yafei Iraq’s efforts to emerge from the provisions of Chapter VII through the implementation of international obligations, in particular file of prisoners and missing Kuwaiti property and the maintenance of border pillars.

A statement by the Foreign Ministry today, “said the two sides also discussed during the meeting, the tracks and the positive developments in the relationship between the two countries after the settlement of Iraqi Airways file and the Convention on maritime navigation in the Khawr Abd Allah.

For its part, the French Ambassador expressed her country’s support for efforts by Iraq out of Chapter VII and in the interest of the two countries towards a better future.

In the same context, Bahr al-Ulum also reviewed at the meeting with Jia Zhou People’s Republic of China Ambassador to Kuwait, Iraq’s efforts to emerge from the provisions of Chapter VII regarding the situation with Kuwait.

UNITED NATIONS, June 7 (KUNA) — With the post of Gennady Tarasov, the High-level Coordinator for the missing Kuwaiti nationals and property, being vacant for almost six months, Kuwait expressed readiness to accept Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s proposal to fold those humanitarian issues under the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), but with strings attached.

council every six months, with the first report due no later than 1 January 2012, about the United
Nations compensation fund, evaluating the continued compliance with the provisions of
paragraph 21 of resolution 1483 (2003).

Though there appears to be a great deal of appetite on the Council for downgrading Iraq’s remaining obligations from Chapter VII to Chapter VI, most Council members are sensitive to Kuwait’s position on the matter and are waiting for explicit communication from Kuwait that it is ready to see Iraq exit Chapter VII. Kuwait has agreed in principle that Iraq could be released from its current Chapter VII obligations, but requires assurances that Iraqi progress on its obligations will continue. (more…)

BAGHDAD, Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshayar Zebari said Thursday that Iraq is about to end its Chapter VII status after reaching agreements with Kuwait on resolving pending issues under Chapter VI of the UN Charter.

Zebari identified the longstanding issues with Kuwait as finding and returning Kuwaiti prisoners of war and missing people; returning seized Kuwaiti properties; returning Kuwait state body archives; repairing border markers; and compensations. (more…)

Britain revealed that the Security Council will transfer some files relating to Kuwait and Iraq from Chapter VII to Chapter VI of the UN Charter when looking the issue in July.

The news agency KUNA Kuwait today announced the UK Ambassador to the United Nations Lyall Grant, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council during the month that he was “taking into account the progress made by Iraq in the implementation of its commitments to the United Nations towards Kuwait, the council will transfer some of the issues related to the Chapter VII to Chapter VI of the UN Charter when it meets to discuss the issue next month. ” (more…)

UNITED NATIONS, June 4 (KUNA) — UN Security Council (UNSC) acknowledged progress achieved by Iraq in implementing its UN obligations towards Kuwait, thus will move some related issues from Chapter VII to VI of UN Charter when it meets on the matter next month, UNSC President said.

Mark Lyall-Grant, British Ambassador to UN and rorating UNSC President, told a press conference that UNSC will hold consultations on June 27 on Iraq-Kuwait “where there have been some positive developments, with the prospect of moving some dossiers from Chapter VII to Chapter VI when the mandate of the High-Level Coordinator on Kuwait missing persons and property, who left his post in late December, is examined in July. JEDDAH, June 2 (KUNA) ­­ GCC foreign ministers have commended an understanding between Kuwait and Iraq over a mechanism to follow up the issue of prisoners and missing people from Kuwait and other countries, as well as returning the State of Kuwait’s properties and national archive.

The foreign ministers, in a statement at the end of their one­day meeting here, welcomed Iraq’s cooperation to implementing UN Security Council’s (UNSC) resolutions, namely those related to the completion of maintenance of border signs with Kuwait.

BAGHDAD/ Aswat al-Iraq: Iraqi foreign minister Hoshiar Zebari stated that Iraq convinced Kuwait to transfer the borders question from UN Chapter VII to Chapter VI, expressing satisfaction of bilateral talks with Kuwait.

In a press conference, at the ministry, on the results of his visit to Kuwait, he stated that “our plan to end the work of UN coordinator’s work, because his stay means continued sanctions against the country”. (more…)
