After five years in the making, Iraq’s parliament could have a first reading of a landmark oil law by early February, a senior Iraqi energy official said on Monday.

Adnan al-Janabi, head of Iraq’s oil and energy committee, said he “hoped for some movement next month” on the legislation that is crucial to resolving a bitter feud between Baghdad and the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region over oil rights.

Janabi’s committee has been poring over two versions of text that address the core disagreements between Baghdad and Arbil: the role of the governorates, the composition of the federal council, the ability of the regions and governorates to sign contracts and the issue of previously signed contracts. Erbil, Nov. 17 (AKnews) – Royal Dutch Shell is pulling out of talks with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in a bid to protect its lucrative contracts with Baghdad, reports the Financial Times.

The Anglo-Dutch supermajor has concluded a $17 billion USD, 25 year deal with the Iraqi Government in conjunction with Mitsubishi to collect the vast supplies of wasted natural gas from the country’s southern oil fields.

The Iraqi Council of Ministers agreed to a a deal with the international companies to establish the Basra Gas Company, a public-private partnership seeing Baghdad take a 51% stake, Shell 44% and Mitsubishi 5%. (more…)

Most of increase is in oil sector as crude prices are seen at all time high of $109

A surge in oil prices to their highest average of around $109 a barrel this year will add a whopping $305 billion to the economies of Gulf hydrocarbon producers while their current account surplus will also hit a record high.

Projections by a key Western financial centre showed the bulk of the increase in their nominal GDP of the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) will be in the hydrocarbon sector due to high prices and production by members.

BAGHDAD (Iba) .. Revealed the Oil Ministry said Wednesday that Iraq exported an average of 2.225 million barrels per day in May, compared with 2.141 million barrels per day in April to its highest level since 2003.

The news agency Reuters news of the President of the State Oil Marketing Organisation (Somo) Falah al-Ameri said that Iraq exported 1.725 million barrels per day of oil hub of Basra in the south and 500 thousand barrels per day from the northern oil fields around Kirkuk, including ten of thousands of barrels per day by truck to Jordan .

Al-Ameri added that the average selling price was about $ 108 a barrel.
