DOHA: The GCC’s hydrocarbon reserves are estimated to be worth around $65 trillion at current export prices, based on new analysis from QNB Capital. This is almost a third of the $200 trillion value of world oil and gas reserves.

To put $65 trillion in context, it is equivalent to 47 times the GCC’s estimated GDP in 2011, or 93 percent of global GDP. It is also 125 times the estimated $521 billion that the region’s governments received in oil and gas revenue during 2011. (more…)

Baghdad (news) .. President of the Council discussed the Supreme Islamic Iraqi al-Hakim with a representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations and the outgoing results of his visit to Kuwait and Qatar.

Depreciating dollar could pose challenge: QCB chief

DOHA: Qatar is closely following the developments in the US and hopes that a deal would eventually be done to raise the debt ceiling by the deadline of August 2.

The governor of the Qatar Central Bank (QCB), H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Saud Al Thani, said that inflation was currently under control in the country, but a depreciating dollar could pose a challenge.

The Qatari economy is immune to any adversity the US debt crisis might cause since being the largest economy of the world, many countries can be affected if the US fails to reach a deal on the debt ceiling by August 2.

The Kuwaiti ambassador’s Deputy Mohammad Al-Mutairi was also elected as Vice-Chairman of the Disarmament and International Security Committee, known as First Committee.

Baghdad (news) .. A source in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that the former president of the U.S. House of Representatives Democrat Nancy Pelosi will arrive today to Baghdad from the Qatari capital of Doha at the head of a delegation from the U.S. Congress.

The source told the said Agency (news) said Wednesday that Pelosi will meet with Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and other Iraqi government officials.

The source speculated that Pelosi is looking for the issue of U.S. withdrawal from Iraq by end of this year as well as issues related to regional security.

Pelosi has held consultations Friday with Crown Prince of Qatar Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani and discussed U.S. relations with the country in addition to a number of security issues.

US Secretary of State will meet with government officials at each stop

Washington: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will leave here on Saturday for a tour of the UAE, Oman and Qatar, the State Department said on Thursday.

During the trip from January 8 through January 13, Clinton will meet with government officials at each stop to discuss “a full-range of regional and bilateral issues,” Mark Toner, a State Department official, told reporters.
She will also “emphasise the importance of government-civil society engagement,” he said, referring to the need for governments to work with political, environmental and other activists.

“In addition to these meetings, the secretary will engage with civil society and community leaders in each country working to help citizens realize shared aspirations for progress,” Toner said.
