Turkey’s lira rebounded against the dollar as investors bought the currency that traded near the weakest level in more than two years.

The lira gained 0.1 percent to 1.7822 per dollar at 5:30 p.m. in Istanbul, after falling to 1.7966. It reached 1.7994 on Aug. 11, the weakest since March 2009. The lira’s 14 percent decline this year makes it the worst performer among 25 major emerging-market currencies tracked by Bloomberg.

Aug. 15 (Bloomberg) — Turkey’s lira climbed against the dollar after central bank Governor Erdem Basci said the currency was undervalued and a rapid solution to Europe’s debt problems may drive the lira higher.

The lira strengthened as much as 0.9 percent after Basci’s comments and traded 0.5 percent stronger at 1.7692 per dollar by 5:12 p.m. in Istanbul, gaining for a second day and trimming this month’s loss to 4.6 percent. The currency headed for its strongest close in almost a week.

The lira strengthened against the dollar, extending this week’s advance, as Greece moved closer to avoiding default.

The lira appreciated 0.2 percent to 1.6200 per dollar at 11:24 a.m. in Istanbul, extending this week’s gain to 1 percent. Two-year benchmark bonds rose, with yields falling two basis points, or 0.02 percentage point, to 9.16 percent, data compiled by Bloomberg showed.
