Last month the Central Bank of Iraq co-hosted a conference with USAID’s Iraq Financial Development Project on “Integrating the Banking and Financial Services Sector in Iraq.” This event, which was held in Istanbul from November 18-19 covered two upcoming changes to the payments system that have the potential to revolutionize Iraq’s banking sector.

The first is the introduction of a “national switch” for processing credit card and ATM transactions. The switch—essentially a router and some specialized software—will connect all of Iraq’s ATM machines and credit card point-of-sale scanners to a common platform. At present, each card-issuing bank operates its own system. Because not every point of sale is connected to every system, no one card will work everywhere. Little wonder that almost everything is paid for in cash. (more…)

Banking sectorIraq seeks to develop its banking sector, by launching the system to transfer or withdraw funds by mobile phone, which uses 70 percent of Iraqis, while 20 percent of them have only a bank account.

This project aims to allow banking operations while reducing the movement of people, in the country is witnessing acts of violence almost daily, and is considered among the most corrupt countries in the world.

Supervisors say the plan, which is scheduled to enter into force within one year, that this step will be an additional source of income for banks as it will double the number of financial transactions.

The governor of the Iraqi Central Bank, Sinan Shabibi, at a press conference in Baghdad, on Monday, said the project which is supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development «very important to strengthen the capacity of the private banking sector».

Iraq to bring in central payment gateway

Iraq’s central bank has signed a memorandum of agreement with the US Agency for International Development (USAID) to introduce a central payment gateway aimed at boosting transactions in the private retail banking sector, Reuters has reported.

The $15m-$20m Iraq payment system (IPS) will allow individuals and businesses to make and receive interbank and international payments electronically via a single gateway.

Baghdad (news) .. discussed the Chairman of the Board of Deputies of Osama Nujaifi with a delegation from the U.S. Agency for International Development, USAID, headed by Paul Randolph ways to improve and speed up the legislative mechanisms within the House of Representatives so as to enhance the speed of completion of outstanding laws.

A statement from the House of Representatives received Agency (news) on Sunday: that Nujaifi stressed during Allqaaly the importance of strengthening the independence of the Council in all programs, and the mechanism of the relationship with the executive, stressing that the Iraqi constitution has proved this point and the Chamber of Deputies is the supreme legislative authority in the country.
