BAGHDAD / NINA / The acting governor of the Central Bank of Iraq, Abdul Basit Turki discussed with the U.S. Federal Bank the issue of the protection of Iraq’s money.

A statement of the Central Bank of Iraq cited that the issue of the Iraqi Central Bank reserves and the Development Fund for Iraq and other technical issues were discussed during the meeting, which came on the sidelines of the spring meetings currently being held in Washington.”

Baghdad (AIN) –The White House assured that “The US Vice-President Joe Biden received on Friday the Iraqi Deputy Premier for Energy Affairs Hussein al-Shahristani and discussed with him issues of interest for Iraq and the Middle East.”

A concise statement by the White House mentioned that “The US VP appreciated the participation of the Iraqi DP at the meeting held by the Iraqi- US Coordination Committee for Energy in Washington during this week.”

Iraq participates in the joint Spring Meetings of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, which began Friday in the U.S. capital Washington and continue for three days.

Parliamentary source reported to AIN Thursday “The Parliament held its regular session, chaired by Speaker Nijaifi,” noting that “The agenda of the session is expected to witness voting on dismissing Baghdad Mayor Sabir al-Esawi as well as resignation of the State of Law Coalition’s MP Jabir Habeeb Jabir after being appointed as the Iraqi Ambassador to Washington.” (more…)

About the Spring Meetings
Each Spring, thousands of government officials, the private sector, journalists, civil society representatives, and other interested observers gather in Washington DC for the Spring Meetings of the IMF and the World Bank.

At the heart of the gathering are meetings of the IMF’s International Monetary and Financial Committee and the joint World Bank-IMF Development Committee, which discuss progress on the work of the IMF and the World Bank. Also featured are seminars, regional briefings, press conferences, and many other events focused on the global economy, international development, and the world’s financial markets.

The U.S. Department of State’s Office of Iraq Affairs has hosted a Doing Business in Iraq Workshop in Washington, D.C, where over 100 U.S. businesses interested in all sectors of the Iraqi economy registered.

The workshop is part of a larger initiative that aims to engage, educate, and support U.S. businesses as well as provide information on the business climate, risk factors, and upcoming business opportunities in Iraq. Baghdad {: News} Euphrates said an adviser to Prime Minister Mohammed Fadhil that most of the money and Iraqi oil revenues are deposited in the U.S. central bank, adding that Iraq needs to renew the protection for these funds in order not to allow any company booking them.

He said the Sadrist movement led by Muqtada al-Sadr, last Wednesday called on the government of Iraq to Washington to protect Iraqi funds abroad, a mandate to “occupation” of new, while the student government to rid of those funds and return them to the Iraqi treasury, and invited them to open an investigation into theft of the Committee on the reconstruction of Iraq, the Department’s U.S. $ 17 billion dollars. BAGHDAD — Less than two months after American troops left, the State Department is preparing to slash by as much as half the enormous diplomatic presence it had planned for Iraq, a sharp sign of declining American influence in the country.

Officials in Baghdad and Washington said that Ambassador James F. Jeffrey and other senior State Department officials are reconsidering the size and scope of the embassy, where the staff has swelled to nearly 16,000 people, mostly contractors.

WASHINGTON, Feb 6 (KUNA) — President Barack Obama has ordered new US sanctions on the government of Iran, including the Central Bank, the White House announced on Monday.

In a statement accompanying his order, which was signed on Sunday, Obama said the sanctions were warranted because of the “deceptive practices” of the Central Bank and the “unacceptable risk” posed to the international financial system by Iran’s activities. (more…)

Opinions varied in the ability of the United States to help Iraq out of Chapter VII and the international sanctions imposed on it since 1990.

MP for the high-mass white Nassif said the United States did not work during the years of its occupation of Iraq to take him out of international sanctions. She told (people) that Washington did not leave a positive effect in Iraq, but on the contrary, sought to stoke the differences between the Iraqis before the exit. She said the United States is working to promote the countries occupied by or under agreements with them and raise their capacity in various areas, but did not do that with Iraq, and now to suffer from the effects of international sanctions.
