The White House announced in Washington that U.S. Vice President Joe Biden met this afternoon Deputy Prime Minister of Iraq for Energy, Hussain al-Shahristani, and discussed with him in various important issues that concern Iraq and the Middle East.

He said a brief statement that the Vice President of the Republic thanked the Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister for his participation in this week’s meeting, which convened in Washington for the US-Iraqi joint coordination of energy. WASHINGTON, Feb 6 (KUNA) — President Barack Obama has ordered new US sanctions on the government of Iran, including the Central Bank, the White House announced on Monday.

In a statement accompanying his order, which was signed on Sunday, Obama said the sanctions were warranted because of the “deceptive practices” of the Central Bank and the “unacceptable risk” posed to the international financial system by Iran’s activities. (more…)

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Independent MP Hassan al-Alawi said that Premier Nouri al-Maliki is carrying “semi-insoluble dossiers” during his visit to Washington, pointing that the visit comes in its “right trend before US forces withdrawal from Iraq”.

Al-Alawi pointed out to Aswat al-Iraq that “there are pending dossiers, such as the present political crisis, the security situation following the withdrawal, immunity to trainers, latest developments on regions’ questions”, but he added that “the visit should come out with something new”. (more…)

(CNN) — Iraq’s prime minister will visit the White House next month, just a couple of weeks before American service members are scheduled to depart from the country.

President Barack Obama will welcome Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki on December 12, the White House said Friday.

“The two leaders will hold talks on deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership between the United States and Iraq. The president honors the sacrifices and achievements of all those who have served in Iraq, and of the Iraqi people, to reach this moment full of promise for an enduring U.S.-Iraq friendship,” the White House said in a statement.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A White House official says President Barack Obama will announce Friday that U.S. troops will be out of Iraq by the end of the year.

The announcement will allow the U.S. to say definitively that the war in Iraq is over after eight years. The official says the partnership between the U.S. and Iraq will become a normal one between two sovereign nations.
